By Road

The easiest way to find Nags Head is to take your preferred method of travel into North Carolina (usually I-95, I-85, I-40 or some combination of the 3), and then find your way onto US-64 East (probably somewhere around Raleigh) which will take you the rest of the way out to the Outer Banks.

The pier is located at mile post 16.5 on NC-12. On NC-12 and US-158, the mile markers are a better and quicker guide than any address, and on both roads mile markers go up as you travel south on the island.

From the North

From the northern bridge over the sound, you’ll travel about 16 miles down NC-12, seeing the pier on your left. If you’re traveling on US-158, just take any available left to cross over to NC-12 and continue until you see mile post 16.5.

From the West

From US-64, you’ll cross the bridge from Roanoke Island into Nags Head and keep straight onto NC-12 North. After a gradual curve, you’ll be at the intersection of NC-12 and Old Oregon Inlet Road, with the pier directly across from you on the right-hand side of the street. If you kept left and find yourself on 158 instead, just take any right to cross over to NC-12 and come back south to see the pier on your left.

By Air

The closest airport is Norfolk International Airport (ORF) in Norfolk, VA which is 90 miles North of the Outer Banks by road. Don’t worry, there are plenty of shuttle and taxi services that will take you the rest of the way and the trip is about 2 hours.
